Community Speed Watch

Local residents in Spondon have been working with the police to tackle speeding through their village.

A community speedwatch took place on Monday, September 30 in the Locko Road area of Spondon.

PCSO Kate Bannister and PC Vicki Marriott from Spondon Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team organised the initiative and were joined by local residents to assist them with monitoring the speed of traffic passing through.

PCSO Bannister said: “Speedwatch does play an important role in speed reduction and is very effective.

“In a two hour period, a total of 159 vehicles were checked with 17 stopped and the driver spoken to by officers and local residents about their manner of driving."

Drivers are also warned that if they are caught breaking the speed limit again they may face a penalty and that data recorded by the initiative may help officers identify locations for speed detection equipment in the future.

PCSO Bannister added:” Speeding through this village is a real issue for especially with the location of schools in the area and pupils using this road in particular.

“These speedwatch events help to raise awareness of this problem and identify motorists who are breaking the law.”
